Mock Trial Team Competes in County Trial

The Aquinas Mock Trial team competed in its first-ever County Trial, marking an exciting milestone for the program.

The team was composed of seven students: Elise Metzler, John Dolan, and Lily O’Neill served as attorneys; Morgan Randall, Sophia Peniche, and Ali Swift appeared as witnesses; and Katrina Kedzierski fulfilled the crucial role of timekeeper. The judge and jurors for the trial were all practicing attorneys, adding to the authenticity and intensity of the experience.

Despite a challenging start—caused by a two-hour delay and a preceding trial that ran long—the Aquinas team rose to the occasion. County Mock Trial closely mirrors real courtroom procedure: two teams take opposing positions, fully preparing their cases, mastering their roles, and effectively “becoming” attorneys and witnesses for the duration of the trial. Aquinas competed as the defense, facing Mt. Lebanon as the plaintiff.

The trial followed formal courtroom structure, beginning with opening statements, followed by witness examinations and cross-examinations, and concluding with closing statements. Every segment was carefully timed, with point deductions for exceeding limits, placing a premium on precision, preparation, and composure.

Although all Aquinas competitors were new to the County Trial level, any early nerves quickly gave way to confident, focused performances. The jurors ultimately declared Aquinas the victor in the trial. Individual honors were also awarded, with Sophia Peniche earning Best Witness and John Dolan receiving Best Advocate (Attorney).

The team’s next trial will take place on February 3. As they continue their journey, they ask for the intercession of St. Thomas More, the patron saint of lawyers and statesmen. A win in the next round would advance the team to two additional trials later this year.
