Chess Invitational
The 2025 Chess Invitational was a huge success! Thanks to our participants and volunteers. Check back for next year's tournament in March!
Students from kindergarten to grade twelve are cordially invited to participate in a chess tournament at Aquinas Academy of Pittsburgh. All levels of ability are welcome to compete and there is plenty of space for family and friends to watch. The tournament is organized by Mr. Michael Burchill, director of the Aquinas Academy Chess Club.
Sections
Tentative groupings are as follows but may be adjusted based on entries:
• Division I: 9th-12th grade
• Division II: 6th-8th grade
• Division III: 4nd-5th grade
• Division IV: 2nd-3rd grade
• Division V: K–1st grade
Format
Each participant will play four games (approximately 40 minutes each) unless given a “bye.” Unfinished games will be judged by the tournament director or his assistants. Players will be paired with those of similar records after each round to promote competitive matches. Tie breakers will be based on strength of opponents and other criteria.
Awards
Trophies or medals will be given to the top finishers in each division. Every kindergarten student will receive a participation ribbon.
Schedule
Students should bring a chess set, if possible, and report to the school gym by 3:50 p.m. for brief announcements. The matches should end by about 7:00 p.m. and the award ceremony will follow after the places have been determined. The high school division should end by 7:30 p.m. with awards to follow.
Concessions will be available throughout the tournament.
