Girls from our Aquinas Academy varsity basketball team went to the PennWest California University Women’s Basketball camp with Coach Kurzawski and won the Varsity Overtime Tournament Championship! (Aug. 08, 2024)
Kate Gillespie, an Aquinas Academy sophomore, competed at the ATA Taekwondo World Championship in Phoenix on July 26th and brought home a World Champion title after the Varsity Team USA defeated Canada and Chile in the final rounds of Combat Sparring. She also brought home the silver medal for the JV Team Division Sparring and bronze medals for both Individual Sparring and JV Team Division Combat Sparring. In the runup to the World Competition, Kate took 1st places in both Individual Combat Sparring and Traditional Sparring at the June Northeast District Championship in Lancaster and earned a spot on the 2025 Varsity ATA Team USA Combat Team during the June Arkansas tryouts. The Aquinas Academy 6th grade boys basketball team defeated Seneca Valley in the recent championship game of the Pittsburgh Youth Basketball League, winning 34-28. Congratulations! (July 30, 2024)
Aquinas Academy junior, Savannah Deschamps, competed in the 2024 World Ninja League Championships last month in Greensboro, NC. This was Savannah’s first year in the Elite Female Division and she placed in the following categories:

Aquinas Academy student Chase Dippold played center for Team Pennsylvania at The Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament in Edmonton, Canada. The Brick Tournament is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the most talented young athletes. Tryouts take two years and some former Brick Tournament participants have gone on to play in the NHL. Alumni News: The tank unit of Sergeant Peter Flaherty won the Strike Cup competition in Germany and the Iron Cup competition at Fort Bliss and went on to compete in the prestigious Sullivan Cup featuring 11 of the best tank units from the USA and our allies where they finished 3rd out of 11 units! The Aquinas Academy 5th-8th grade soccer teams finished their strong seasons with an exciting diocesan soccer playoff weekend. The 5th grade team won their section and were runners-up in the championship game. The 6th grade team won their section and made it to semi-finals in the playoffs. The 7/8 grade team was second in section play and finished as runner-up in the championship game. Earning All-Tournament honors were John Paul Richthammer, Rosa Yuo, Teddy Burchill, Peter Dolan, Ethan Mullican, Enzo Anselmino, Matthew Conley, Michael Richthammer, Brendan Roney and Mark Rounding. The Aquinas Academy Speech and Debate team recently competed against high school students from across the nation at the National Catholic Forensic League National Tournament in Chicago. JJ Ortiz advanced to the quarterfinals in Poetry, finishing an impressive 24th out of 185 entries. Clara Yuo, competing in Congressional Debate, finished 52nd out of 169, missing the semifinals by only 2 places. Brynn Burnsworth and Claire McMann, in Duo Interpretation, finished 60th out of 168 entries. Congratulations! (May 29, 2024)
Aquinas Academy has a new beehive as part of our campus and curriculum, giving students the opportunity to learn about these helpful pollinators first hand. Naming rights for the queen bee were auctioned at our spring Gala and she was recently named Queen Polly Nator. (May 24, 2024)

The Aquinas Academy 5th grade and 6th grade teams each finished with an undefeated soccer season and in 1st place in section play. These teams, along with the 7th/8th grade team, await the playoffs. Go, Crusaders! (May 20, 2024)
The Diocesan developmental soccer tournament and the all-girls middle school soccer tournament took place over the weekend. The highlights: one of Aquinas Academy’s first-grade teams made the semi-finals; the 7⁄8 girls finished in second place; and, the 5⁄6 girls finished champions. Making all-tournament team for the 7⁄8 girls were Mary Grace Dolan, Maggie Koenig, and Gabby Keverline for her fine performance in goal. Earning all-tournament team honors for the 5⁄6 team were Rosa Yuo, Reese Dippold, and Addie Phelps. Danielle Whitney was tournament MVP. Congratulations to all participants. (May 20, 2024)
A group of Aquinas Academy 8th-12th grade girls volunteered at the Kids Day America community event in Butler. The event helps fund Isaiah 117 House, which assists children who are in transition to foster care. These girls painted over 150 faces during the 4 hour event. (May 20, 2024)
Alexis Abbett placed 2nd in the 3200m at the WPIAL High School Track and Field Championship on May 16 at Slippery Rock University despite a very long wait and multiple weather delays over two days! Alexis qualified for the PIAA Championship, which will be held at Shippensburg University on May 25th. Congratulations and best of luck to Alexis as she completes her school record-breaking high school running career at Aquinas. (May 18, 2024)

The Aquinas Academy High School boys volleyball team won their final match of the season, beating Trinity Christian in three sets. The boys baseball team ended their inaugural season with an impressive 3-0 win over Hillel Academy. Congratulations on the great season, boys! (May 14, 2024)

The first Aquinas Academy High School baseball team made several firsts again on Friday in their first-ever win in a 15-0 victory over Summit Academy. Ian Patterson, Josh Schlemmer, and Jackson Vollmer all combined for the shut-out on the pitcher’s mound. Jackson Vollmer recorded the first ever three run homer. Luke Crawford threw the first guy out trying to steal second, and Patrick Richthammer scored the first run by stealing home. Everyone contributed to the first win and the team looks forward to many more firsts this year. (Apr. 22, 2024)
Aquinas Academy Track and Field is having a great season! Alexis Abbett is having a record-breaking senior track season. Alexis is currently 33rd in Pennsylvania, across all PIAA divisions in the 3200. Alexis is 2nd in the WPIAL right now in the 3200 AA. She is also 10th in the mile in AA. The Aquinas Academy High School Track and Field team has broken 16 school records this season. Our 4x800 relay is ranked 14th in the WPIAL right now. (Apr. 22, 2024)
The Aquinas Academy High School boys baseball team made history on April 16th playing in their first-ever game. Despite not pulling off a victory over their opponent, Avonworth, in their first game, the team made plenty of firsts. Josh Schlemmer recorded the first hit in his and the team’s first at bat. Jack Stanton and Jonah Burchill recorded their first strikeouts as pitchers. Jack Stanton turned the team’s first double play. Jonah Burchill recorded the team’s first RBI and Gio Spotts recorded the first run. We look forward to many more firsts this season! (Apr. 17, 2024)

Jack Gillespie, an Aquinas Academy senior, won the section finals in Section 3 boys’ tennis this week to secure a spot in the WPIAL Championships! He beat the no. 2 at Burrell 10-0 in a 10 game pro-set and the no. 2 at North Catholic 6-2, 6-1 in the semi-finals, and North Catholic 6-2, 6-3 in the finals. The Aquinas Academy Mock Trial team recently competed at the 2024 Statewide High School Mock Trial Competition Championships, held in Harrisburg, PA. In the first round, Clara Yuo and Lucy Fowler won best attorney and witness. In round two, Clara Yuo and Isabel Giancola were chosen best attorney and witness. Congratulations!

The Aquinas Academy High School girls basketball team beat fourth place Riverview, 45-37, in their WPIAL playoff consolation game. With the win, the girls finish third overall in the WPIAL playoffs and qualify to compete in the PIAA state tournament. (Feb. 29, 2024)
The fourth graders in Mrs. Miller’s class hand-made Valentine’s Day cards that were sent to Pittsburgh Veterans. And, they got a heartfelt thank you letter from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs! We are proud of our students’ charity and grateful for our Veterans. (Feb. 29, 2024)
Aquinas speakers did well at the state speech and debate qualifier on Saturday, February 24th. Brynn Burnsworth and Clair McMann took second place in Duo Interpretation, JJ Ortiz won Programmed Oral Interpretation, and Caitlyn Abbett won Dramatic Interpretation. All four qualified for the state tournament at Bloomsburg University. Alice Rothfus finished 4th in Congressional Debate and Josh Carr finished third and is the first alternate in Senate. Josh is eligible to compete in the State House at Bloomsburg and Alice Rothfus is eligible to compete in Impromptu. Clara Yuo pre-qualified in Senate and will also compete in Bloomsburg. Alice Rothfus also earned membership in the National Speech and Debate Association. (Feb. 29, 2024)
Lizzie Hardy, Aquinas Academy class of 2022, attends The College of Wooster, where she also plays on the field hockey team. Lizzie recently made the Division III National Academic Squad! The National Academic Squad program honors undergraduate collegiate student-athletes and scholastic junior and senior student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through the first semester of the current academic year. Isabella Hite has been recognized as a Division II Scholar of Distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFCSA). She is also one of 18 student-athletes named to the NFHCA Academic Team. Congratulations to the Aquinas Academy High School boys basketball team for their impressive first round win over California in the WPIAL basketball playoffs! Jacob Guillen scored 37 and Sam Duer added 22 as the boys beat California, 84-50, to advance to the quarterfinals against Neighborhood Academy. That game will take place on Wednesday, February 21st. Benjamin Stalder, class of 2021, attends the University of Richmond as a dual major in music and business. Benjamin is employed by the Office of the Chaplaincy as Music Director for Masses on campus. He selects the music, directs the choir, plays the piano and organ, and arranges music for instrumentalists. Recently, Aquinas Academy sixth graders Regan Carroll, Max Predis, and Garvin Whetzel competed in their first U.S. Fencing Association Youth 12 Mixed Foil tournament at Corsair Fencing Club. Fencing strong in the pools, each delivered an outstanding performance with Predis falling just short of a medal in the direct elimination. Aquinas Academy’s two independent swimmers continued their strong season at the Mars vs. Seneca Valley meet. Sara Sokolski earned her third WPIAL Swimming Championship cut, qualifying in the 100 Butterfly. Clara Yuo also swam the 100 Fly, setting a personal best time. Congratulations, swimmers! Jack and Kate Gillespie, Aquinas Academy High School students and siblings, were inducted onto the 2024 ATA Team USA Varsity Combat Team on January 14th at the first team practice in Memphis. Jack returned for his 3rd year on the team. Kate won her spot this year and is currently the youngest female teammate in ATA history. Jack was also introduced for a second year as part of the 2024 Varsity Sparring team. They are scheduled to represent the United States team at the European Championship in Lisbon, Portugal in April and at the World Championship in July. Congratulations to the Aquinas Academy mock trial teams, who rocked the Cathedral of Learning at Pitt over the weekend. Aquinas A was 3-1 and finished in the top 10 among the 48 teams. Aquinas B was 3-0-1 and finished 4th overall. Anne Dolan, and Clara Yuo won outstanding attorney awards and Lucy Fowler and Enzo Flati won outstanding witness awards. The Aquinas Academy High School boys basketball team won their Christmas tournament, beating Trinity Christian 56-20 in the first game and Springdale 88-79 in the championship game. Nadine Hokaj, an Aquinas Academy 11th grader, recently won first place in the Women’s E and Under foil tournament at Corsair Fencing, earning her U.S. Fencing Association “E” rating. Nadine is the first member in the history of the Aquinas Girls Foil team to have achieved this distinction. In the first swim meet of the season, Sara Sokolski and Clara Yuo represented Aquinas Academy at a dual meet between Mars and Shaler on Tuesday. Clara competed in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Alexis Abbett finished 3rd overall in the WPIAL Cross Country 1A Girls Championship with a time of 19:18.10 and qualified for the PIAA State Championship. The entire girls team did a great job as they finished 9th overall. The boys also ran well, finishing 26th overall in the 1A Boys Championship. JJ Ortiz was the top finisher for the boys. Jack and Kate Gillespie both brought home 2023 Taekwondo World Champ titles! Jack defeated opponents from Chile (7-2) in the semi-finals and Brazil (19-2) in the final match to help ensure his 2023 ATA Team USA Varsity Combat team’s victory at the ATA Taekwondo World Championship held on July 14 in Phoenix, Arizona. Kate helped her local JV team at the World Championships to bring home the gold medal for Combat Sparring for the 2nd consecutive year and the bronze medal for Traditional Sparring. Kate also made the 2024 ATA Team USA co-ed varsity combat team at 14 years old — the youngest female to ever secure a position on the co-ed varsity team. The 4th grade soccer team played in the Diocese of Pittsbugh MLS division this season. They finished the regular season with a 6-1-1 record and finished second at the end of the regular season. In the Diocesan playoffs they beat Guardian Angel 5-1 in the semi-finals. They beat St Bede in the championship game 3-0 to be crowned MLS soccer champion in an amazing game played by all. Eliana BouSamra, Ari Buchanan, Abigail Stalder, and Coach Buchanan combined with West Allegheny H.S. girls and coaches to compete on Saturday night at the Midnight Madness soccer tournament. Thirty-two teams played and the combo team won their first five games, including 2 playoff wins, before losing in the semifinals. Ari scored a game winner to get them to the playoff round. JJ Ortiz had a great weekend at the National Catholic Speech and Debate qualifier at Fox Chapel. JJ placed second in Oral Interpretation and second in Dramatic Performance, qualifying in both categories for the Grand National Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky in May. Violet Johnson scored 14 points, including 12 in the second half, as the Aquinas team defeated defending champion Bishop Canevin 43-37 in a thrilling semifinal game. Students will start school Tuesday, December 9 in the new Mross-McGonigle Hall which will serve as the new home for high school students. The completed $4.85 million dollar building will provide our growing academy with 15 new classrooms, including two state-of-the-art science labs and an arts wing.
